TSO Tour Diary 2004 - Week 4

by Chris Caffery

December 2nd to December 8th

December 2nd - Wings and things....sleep not one of them!

OK...

At some point I am going to need to sleep!

Buffalo was a great show. The band is getting to a point where things are pretty mechanical...which is a great feeling, but I tend to get bored! When I tour I want a new set list every night! We are very tight and everyone is kicking major butt!

It was Bob's home town so there were a lot of Kinkels around...I really did not have much time to do or see anything again...working...

We did get our Anchor Bar wings after the show...not hot enough in many ways....heat and temp!

We rolled into Erie and it was still pretty early. I sat up with Jeff and Doc our bus driver discussing business and life. Next thing I knew it was e-mail hell time...

I tried to hit fan mail first...then business...Europe is waking up at this time so I like to hit them with mail the day before...they get to me and I answer it at 4 or 5AM...by the time I leave the hotel I can get another response....tiring I know...but someone has to do it.

I fell asleep at 6 and woke up again at 8 to check mail and realized I had more trauma so I had to go online...I left my power cord on the bus...Powerbook was dead...I did some phone work and ran to the bus. On the way back I had a cup of coffee with Mark Wood who had just ate breakfast...seems like he had slept for 7 hours already....lucky guy! Alex was up and jogging....Yikes...I am in another world here!

I got back to the room at 10...did some more mail and am writing you. At 11 I have a radio interview with a station in Kentucky. Then I will hope to sleep a few hours before we checkout and I deal with the answers to my mail!

All of this sound tiring? Well, we have a run going of 9 shows in 7 days...Saturday I have 2 shows, followed by a Saturday night Arena signing line and 2 more interviews...one print and one radio...luckily Sunday I get to sleep.....NOT...2 more shows!!!

Talk to you soon!!!

Chris...I think!

December 3rd - Last night is going to be tough to beat!

Hi there...

I am warning you all in the upcoming cities...Erie was incredible. The best audience so far and possibly the best I have ever seen. They were standing and screaming at the oddest times. It was such a pleasant surprise. I think only Boston on the first tour and a few Beacon Theatre shows have come close...it may have been the best audience I have ever seen on stage with TSO.

SO...you better rise up...we will not be easily impressed from now on!

Speaking of rising up....I rolled into Wilkes-Barre ate around 7AM.

I immediately called Psycho Mike from the radio station here 98.5KRZ. Something comforting about rolling into rural Penn. and being picked up by a guy named Psycho Mike in a huge radio station truck! I was on the Rocky and Sue show Monday via phone...today was very different and a Chris Caffery first.

I made it to the station and spent close to an hour on the air. We talked about the show and the tour...then Sue had a surprise helium balloon attack for me. They tried to launch a Christmas Tree with helium this morning. Very Chris Caffery like thinking!

The final thing was a chat about my upcoming release of Faces and the Music Man EP...I brought in an acoustic guitar and sang "Christmas Is" live! This is the first itme I ever sang live on the radio. I was SOOOO nervous..but I think it went well. I can only imagine it getting easier from here. I was not too worried about the voice early...I remember Daryl always had a cup of tea...I did this, but I think it made me more nervous! Anyway, it was a lot of fun and the station people are so nice!!!! They are hosting the 3 shows here.

We are in such a cool hotel here. Amazing view. It is on a little mountain. There is a cliff and a river outside of my room!

I am going to go back to sleep and then hit the gym at 3PM. I got free passes to a health club from the radio station.

Thanks to all in Erie!!! You kicked major Christmas Butt!

Thanks to everyone else for making this place more exciting every day. The support is growing and it is just the beginning!

Goodnight/morning!

Chris

December 4th - Shhh...I am supposed to be sleeping!!!

Hola!

Right now I am experiencing one of those VuJa-De things...the type of thing that has never happened to me!

I can't lie about the post time...so...yup...it is 5:24 now.

On my behalf...I did behave all night. I ordered a pizza in my room with a friend and did not leave the hotel until 2:15 AM.

Oddly enough...there was no business trauma and I was not tired...There is a club here called Diablos. Your friendly neighborhood afterhours place. An anonymous source told me it was the place to go, but to beware.

BEWARE OF WHAT?

A dude in a pink dress, cue ball head and fake tits? A guy in a bolero hat threatening to kill someone over an 8 ball game...a bunch of people who wished they danced as good as Dave Z....

Yup...I saw all 500 Nycity afterhours bars condensed into one.

Scary thing was....everyone knew who I was! We are actually to the point of really frickin big here!

Wilkes Barre #1 was good...I say good because after Erie the crowds need to step it up too!!! I look at it like this. I have been touring the same show for a month. Do I want to relax and be settled into a routine? Frick no....

So....I have the ut-most respect for my audience....but...we are going to step it up. It is getting closer to Christmas....Lets have fun!

I want to encourage people to stand up during the songs they love....clap...dance...let your emotions take over. Let's make this tour the best one yet.

My friend Megan was in the crowd tonite with her Mom and her Grandma.

My Sister was there with her fiance' Jamie and my cousin Mary Kay...

My old friend Steve from the legendary "Rock Fantasy" CD shop in Middletown, NY was there with his Mom and Dad...

Close to home, yet So Far Away!!!!

I need sleep...

A show at 3....

Remember...SHHHHH

I was not out all night!

Me!

December 5th - And then there were 1300!!!

Howdy!

Wilkes Barre day #2 was a ton of fun.

The odd thing was that the matinee crowd kicked Friday night's ass! That usually never happens. I was amused by this mutant flying piece of paper that kept flying around the arena. I know...the little things. This was the first show that we used the snow at the very end. That was really effective.

Afterwards I had a quick shower and a nap. I woke up and Stevie B was on the bus with his Mom. She is a riot...like him!

Next thing ya know it was time again. Ground Hog's Day!

Psycho Mike, Rocky and Sue from KRZ were there to introduce the band. The night show was incredible...The crowd was by far the best of the 3 shows...BUT...Erie still won...

I believe we will play for about 90,000 people in Pennsylvania this year alone...amazing!!! Thank you for this. They say you have a friend in Pennsylvania...we have quite a few!

Jen accidentally wore Daniel's dress for a song. I understand there was a quick change of clothes somewhere! I did not notice, but everyone said it was a bit higher up than usual...not a bad thing!!!

I remembered to thank some people from the military. I received a mail about this and actually remembered! I was happy. I was also really tired by the end of the show. It was a really incredible show.

The autograph line was insane! It lasted 'til about 12:30 AM...I had an interview at midnight that I missed...but did at 12:30...I also went live on the air with Torch and "Rock and a Hard Place". They picked the winner of the Pisses Me Off contest. It is always so much fun to go on their show. I did the interview live at the hotel overlooking the river and a bunch of ducks! This hotel has 5 bars and they were all mobbed. Psycho Mike hosted Saturday night here and it was an amazing time. Alex played live Jazz at one club. He is so incredible!

We have to leave soon for Hershey so I am going to run...I have to pack up my Christmas lights!

Thanks again for making this place a community of 1300...300 new members since Sept 24th! Not a bad pace here!

Chris

December 6th - Real quick

hi...

I am off to Chocolate World!

I love Hershey!

Great shows here so far...

I will address the issue everyone is chatting about when it is time....

all will be well....

Chris

December 7th - Hershey...friends...day off...

Hello all.

Rainy day here in Toledo.

TO all of the board members that knew our friend Anke and her family...I am sorry for your...our loss. She was such a dedicated fan and friend. She will be missed by us all here in Sava/CC/JOP/TSO land...

I am not really sure what it is, I guess I am just getting older and my circle of friends has increased...but I know so many people suffering losses lately.

I just hope everyone stays strong and looks to their friends to help them through these times.

Hershey was a lot of fun. I was visited by my childhood friend Butch...he drove out from New Jersey. Sunday was the longest month of my life!

I did not mention the situation with S.B. on Sunday because frankly it was none of anyone's business but his. He had some personal stuff to take care of and he did. We will see him back on stage tomorrow. He is one of my best friends and when one of my friends needs support or help, I give it to him...not just straight to the board here to feel like I am impressive by spreading information that may complicate a situation.

It was extremely humorous watching James Lewis change from the father to the bum. Actually...he is kinda closer to the bum than the dad anyway!

He was singing Old City Bar almost on the fly. I know there were some very James "Brown" Lewis like lines there! But he did a great job. For 3 shows it was all James Lewis...all the time!

The Sunday matinee was very good...totally sold out. Sunday night too. We got our giant chocolate bar...Rick Weimer and Mark from Hershey are so cool!

In between shows I dragged Butch to the CandyLand thing at the Park. We ran through in one hour! The frickin' reindeer had fake antlers. People think hunting is wrong! I thought it was kinda silly...actually, I just saw dinner!

The station presenting the night show played my "What Child Is This" on Monday! I get to do a live acoustic performance of "Christmas Is" on Saturday at WNCX in Cleveland!

We stayed overnight in the Hershey lodge...I love that town! The band and crew had an amazing time hanging out that night. So many laughs.

I was so exhausted...I had another radio interview which I was actually doing on the signing line on Sunday night. Monday I had another interview in Quebec at 2PM. Then Butch, Tany, Jay Pierce, Tristan the pyro guy and myself went to Chocolate World.

I spent a zillion dollars on chocolate and went to the venue to eat. Which is rare...I never eat catering...never matches my schedule.

The Sunday night show was really good too. About 6,000 people. Not bad considering the old arena held 5,000 and 3 years ago we were happy to sell that out once as out only show here!

We finished the autograph line...lots of Faces Cd's in Hershey BTW! Then we hit the bus and headed to Toledo. We actually just arrived. I am checking my business and going to sleep. I hear talk of a band bowling adventure tonite...I suppose it is safer than golf!

Peace....

chris

December 8th - Bowling...mail...mall...

Hi ya!

Day off...

Yup...I slept...I went to the mall. Failed miserably in finding an A/C adapter for my camera. I have tons of pice to send and lots I want to take, but I lost the frickin' cable!!!!

I came back to the hotel and slept even more...then we had a class bowling trip planned at 9PM. It was fun. I woke up at 8:55 and ran to the bus. I am not sure what alley we were in...but it was fun. Jeff and Daniel are the best bowlers I saw...but I just saw 8 people. James did well...Skippy did at times...depended on how much he was dancing!

I was getting a lot better, but we had to leave....figures!

I have to wake up at 10 for a TV interview...

Stevie is back in Toledo...I am happy...tomorrow I am going to try to find Tony Paco's!!!

Goodnight!
