Chris Caffery is a true workhorse. He is best known for his guitar work in Savatage, but also has played on the solo release from Savatage’s Jon Oliva, works as a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and also makes an appearance on the Circle II Circle release Watching in Silence. Among all this, he somehow found the time to put together a solo release, featuring not one, but two discs worth of songs! As you push play and the CD starts, you will immediately see the impact that Jon Oliva has had on Caffery. His singing style emulates Oliva’s, not to the point of rip-off, but there are times you almost think Jon himself has stepped in. Caffery’s voice is strong though, and those who were wondering if he could pull off being both a guitarist and singer needn’t be worried; he does a wonderful job at both. He almost has a bit of a Jon Oliva/Sebastian Bach/Perry McCarty (ex-Warrior) styling, and it works perfectly for his material. CD number one has many great songs, such as the title track "Faces", "Remember", and my favorite "Evil Is as Evil Does". Caffery will no doubt get the most press out of the track "Pisses Me Off" where he leaves no stone unturned in letting us know how he really feels about things in his everyday life!

CD two is called God Damn War and although it is a concept CD of sorts, it really is just a continuation of the strong songwriting and powerhouse performance that comprises Faces. I would say the GDW disc is the heavier of the two CDs, but both are pretty equal and GDW does have its slower parts as well. Caffery tries to pull off a piano/vocal version of "Amazing Grace" that just doesn’t quite make it. It isn’t bad, it just…well, you can judge it yourself. That is really the only tune that I skip over when listening now, and since there are 25 songs on the two CDs, that is saying a lot. The music is not going to come off as a big surprise to any fans of Savatage, but it is different. Caffery goes in more of the straight-ahead rocking style as opposed to the more prog-stylings of Savatage, which is a perfect way to distinguish himself a bit from the band. Speaking of the band, it is comprised of Caffery on vocals and guitars, Jeff Plate on drums, Dave Z on bass, and Paul Morris on keyboards. Everyone gels really well together, and the production is top-notch. Most bands can’t put together one CD worth listening to start to finish, and Caffery has managed to put out two! Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
